Akrotiri is on the southwestern side of Santorini. It is known for its breathtaking view on the caldera and volcano. Although it is not a tourist resort, similar to Fira and Oia. A highlight in the area is the the ancient settlement of Aktrotiri.
It in the end of the 19th century, the volcanic Theran earth was excavated in order to have material for the construction of the Suez Canal. There are traces of a prehistoric settlement, but they were found in l 1967 when the excavations at the area of ancient Akrotiri started.
Spyridon Marinatos, archeologist and professor at the University of Athens, lead the important excavations that brought the multi-level building and extraordinary wall paintings into light. One of the best preserved ancient settlements in Greece is Akrotiri. The eruption of the volcano in the 17th centure B.C. caused the the spreading of volcano material over the whole island. The material was significant for the protection of the ancient settlement, especially its wall paintings.
