Santorini Archaeological Sites
Akrotiri, is in the south of the island. The Minoan town is around 3,500 years old. Similar to Pompei it is in good condition due to its coverage of volcanic ash. The site is protected by a roofing system, that allows the visitor to see it any time of the year. Have a look at the Minoan pottery and frescoes there. Due to an accident in September 2005, the excavation site is closed to the public and is expected to be opened again in early summer of 2010.
Ancient Thera, located on the Mesa Vouno, 396 m above sea level. The city was founded in the 9th century B.C. by Dorian colonists lead by Theras. During the Byzantine period the city remained inhabited. Its ruins are signs of the Hellenistic and Roman era. German archeologists brought the residential area and the larger part of the cemeteries to light, 1895 and 1902. N. Zapheiropoulos excavated between 1961-1982 the cemeteries of the northeast and northwest slopes of Sellada.
The Museum of Prehistoric Thira is based in Fira. Some of the pieces of art there are coming from the ruins of Akrotiri. We recommend to visit Akrotiri before in order to understand what the items are. At the Museum you can see pots and other household items. Though the highlight of the exhibition are the frescoes of the blue monkeys -- a mystery since historians say there is no evidence that there were ever monkeys on Santorini.
The Archeological Museum is also in Fira, near the cable car station. Its exhibits are from the Classic and Roman period.
